Geometric albedo

May 10, 2016 · Bond albedo for extrasolar planets had been estimated from their visible luminosities at secondary eclipse (i.e., from their geometric albedos A g) and by balancing the flux radiated in the infrared (Schwartz & Cowan 2015). The poorly restricted Bond-to-geometric albedo ratio is explored in this paper using Jupiter and Saturn as examples.

The geometric albedo of an astronomical body is the ratio of its actual brightness at zero phase angle (i.e. as seen from the light source) to that of an idealized flat, fully reflecting, diffusively scattering disk with the same cross-section.. Diffuse scattering implies that radiation is reflected isotropically with no memory of the location of the incident light source. There are many uses of geometric sequences in everyday life, but one of the most common is in calculating interest earned. Mathematicians calculate a term in the series by multiplying the initial value in the sequence by the rate raised to ...The bond albedo is the total radiation reflected from an object compared to the total incident radiation from the Sun. The bond albedo for the Earth is given as 0.29 by de Pater and Lissauer, compared to their value of 0.37 for the geometrical albedo. The planetary albedos given by de Pater and Lissauer are summarized in the following table:

In more technical treatments of albedo, such as that of de Pater and Lissauer, a distinction is made between "bond albedo" and "geometric albedo", the numbers quoted above being geometric albedos. The geometric albedo is defined as the amount of radiation relative to that from a flat Lambertian surface which is an ideal reflector at all ...If we also assume that the dayside of WASP-43b reflects as a Lambertian surface, then the geometric albedo is expected to be A g ~ 0.13, which translates into a planet-to-star flux ratio of A refl ~ 140 ppm, which is seven times larger than the contrast of the planetary thermal radiation. The thermal phase curve of the planetary dayside thus ...An albedo defined by A = pq, where p is the geometric albedo and q is the phase integral. For a spherical planet, A = {\pi R^2\int I(\theta,\phi)\,d\Omega\over(\pi R^2)(\pi F)} = {\int I(\theta, \phi)\,d\Omega\over\pi F}. The bond albedo of the Earth is roughly 0.38. See also: Albedo, Geometric Albedo, Phase Integral At 554 nm, the global average geometric albedo of Vesta is 0.38±0.04, and the Bond albedo range is 0.20±0.02. The bolometric Bond albedo is 0.18±0.01. The phase function of Vesta is similar to those of S-type asteroids. Vesta's surface shows a single-peaked albedo distribution with a full-width-half-max ~17% relative to the global average.

They are derived from Hubble data by measurements of the white dwarf companion characteristics (Sigurdsson et al, 2003) pulsar is in a binary system (period = 191.4428 d.) with a 0.6 M white dwarf companion (Thorsett et al. 1999); this explains the uncertainties in the fitting of the planet parameters. Planetary Systems Around White Dwarfs.Galileo filter response compared to Io albedo The colored lines in this graph show the spectral response of the Galileo SSI camera's filters compared to Io's geometric albedo, which is strongly sloped in visible wavelengths but more uniform in infrared wavelengths. We used ALMA at thermal wavelengths and Magellan in the optical to determine 2013 FY27's size and albedo for the first time and compare it to other dwarf planets. Surface albedo is an important driver of surface processes that promote glacier melting and is a key variable influencing glacier surface melt. Despite much focus in the literature on variations in albedo and its influence on snow surfaces, little attention has been paid to dust and its impact on bare-ice albedo with respect to glacier melting surfaces. In this paper, spatial changes in ... The geometric albedo upper limits which we derive in this work for WASP-18 b, WASP-36 b, WASP-43 b, WASP-50 b, and WASP-51 b all lie below 0.45.Based on an absolute magnitude of 18.2, this results in a notably low albedo of 0.018. More recent modeling combining radar, photometric, and infrared data gave and even more elongated shape of 2.9×2.2×1.5 kilometers. These authors argue that the absolute magnitude value is incorrect and report a geometric albedo of 0.09.

Since the calculated temperature varies as ( 1 − A ) 1 4 {\displaystyle (1-A)^{1 \over 4}} , the dependence is fairly weak for typical asteroid A ≈ p ...
