Introduction. Reconciliation is a concept and political practice applied in many different contexts, from the immediate aftermath of post-apartheid South Africa, to the settler colonies of Australia and Canada, societies fractured by deep historical division such as Northern Ireland, and many ‘post-conflict’ societies in between.

Forgiveness is a personal choice to let go of anger and resentment towards the person who has wronged you. Reconciliation, on the other hand, is a mutual agreement to rebuild the relationship.
