In the Flint Hills section and in southeastern Kansas are gravels that consist mainly of just one mineral, chert or flint, which weathered from Paleozoic limestones. These brown, hard, resistant gravels commonly cap the uplands in Anderson, Cowley, Elk, Greenwood, Lyon, Morris, Wabaunsee, Geary, Riley, Pottawatomie, and Marshall counties.St. Jacob's Well was also used by drovers driving cattle from Texas to the railroads in Kansas the late 1800s.
